Each hero in the game has a specialization, which is his unique ability. The best development strategy for your hero is to compile his Spell Book and set of skills in such a way that they would complement and reinforce his unique ability. Unlike HoMM, your hero’s unique ability will not just reinforce his creatures and spells, but will also to provide him with new, otherwise unavailable opportunities.
