Will Space Shuttle Atlantis Launch Sunday? Saturday August 26, 2006 Weather may play a part in whether the Space Shuttle Atlantis launches on schedule Sunday. At a 10:00 a.m. Saturday morning briefing, NASA officials didn’t seen too concerned over a lightning strike to the launch pad structure late Friday. Evaluations are still being conducted in regard to any damage that might have occurred with regard to the lightning strike, but no delays are expected at this time. More of a concern is local weather at the time of launch and Tropical Storm Ernesto. At this time, there is only a 40% chance that local weather would delay the space shuttle launch. However, if Ernesto heads toward Houston after reaching the Gulf of Mexico, it could force NASA to change plans because of a possible evacuation of the Mission Control Center located there.
