Under ideal conditions sand would not cause any problems. Sand in your gas tank is not an ideal condition. Get it out of there!!!!

sand in your fuel tank will damage the rotars on an in tank pump and might damage the diaphram on a mechanical but only if it gets past the in tank or engine bay fuel filter
