It is possible that wear and tear can cause a modchip to stop working properly. It is as sensitive to damage as any other silicon-based electronic circuit. However it is more likely that the lens is dirty, the game discs have defects, or the dvd laser is wearing out. I’ve never heard of a modchip being outdated, as long as you’re using it in the hardware it’s designed for. Since some of your games work in other ps2’s it may be that the dvd laser is wearing down. In ps2’s this is inevitable, the laser will not last forever. Its typical life is about 5 years, it is said to be less for the slim models. To check for laser problems, first rule out a dirty lens by cleaning it gently with isopropyl alcohol; the rule out disc scratches, by checking for scratches that run in a circular arc; then try adjusting the height of the laser (see link); identify what types of discs work, and what types don’t, to see which laser might be having trouble. There’s a cd laser and a dvd laser. Look at the bot
