A clearant must be miscible with alcohol and paraffin. Additionally, it should rapidly replace alcohol during clearing. Xylene substitutes can work well if the chemistry of the replacement clearant is understood. Few clearants work as rapidly as xylene and their relative ability to clear alcohols and penetrate paraffin must also be well understood.
