Will Pigmy Date Palms (PHOENIX roebelenii) grow in hot dry climates?
PHOENIX roebeleniis (commonly known as Pigmy Date Palms) are native to the rain forests of Laos. They will do well in hot dry climates, but there are a few considerations that need to be understood. They will do best in full to partial shade, but will not grow in dark areas such as indoor corners. Pigmy Date Palms that are planted in full sun can burn and show signs of wilting. The fronds may turn yellow or brown. These palms are sensitive to over-watering and need well drained soil. Pigmy Date Palms need to be watered by deep soaking them and then allowed to dry out in between waterings. They will drown if it sits in an area of too much water. Also, deep infrequent waterings will help remove salt build ups around the roots. To check the soil moisture, dig down along side the root ball approximately 2′.
