Will OHIP cover medical/hospital fees if injured while on vacation?
OHIP will cover out-of-country medical expenses on a very limited basis. OHIP will only cover for emergencies that occurred while you are out of the country. Because OHIPs coverage is limited, they recommend you get private traveller’s insurance. OHIP will cover doctor’s bills, but only up to the rate they would pay a doctor for the same care in Ontario. They will cover up to $50 a day in hospital costs, and $200 a day if you are admitted. They do not cover ambulances or other transportation. Considering the average hospital stay in Canada (not including the doctor) costs about $7,000 it is worthwhile to buy additional private insurance.
