Will manipulatives work well when teaching in multi-graded classrooms?
You can use the manipulatives to teach the same concept at each grade but have the students work at different levels. The model unit for Grades 6/7 in the curriculum guide gives some suggestions for using manipulatives to teach fraction concepts in a mixed Grades 6 and 7 class. The more capable students can help the less capable ones. Often teaching others can help an individual better understand the material him/herself. Manipulatives can be used in activity stations or independently for problem solving.
