Wednesday July 29, 2009 For as long as most people in the central California city of Lodi can remember, their City Council has started its meetings with a short prayer, which often specifically asked Jesus Christ for guidance and blessings. In May 2009, Lodis prayers were answered by a threatened law suit. In a letter to city leaders threatening the law suit, the Freedom From Religion Foundation contended that by invoking the name of Jesus Christ in its prayers, Lodi was violating the First Amendments guarantee of separation of church and state, and its own policy stating that religious invocations should be nonsectarian and nondenominational.
