Will “Ice Age 3” Render the Series Extinct?
There’s no figuring out the American moviegoer. Ice Age 3: Dawn of the Dinosaurs has racked up, by far, the worst reviews of any of the Ice Age movies (and it’s not as if the first two were hailed as latter-day Pinocchios), yet the movie grossed over $40 million over the July 4 weekend and promises to at least hit the $100 million mark. (If it’s any consolation, Ice Age 3 appears to be running neck-and-neck with another piece of warmed-over Hollywood dreck, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen.) What gives? Well, it helps that 20th Century Fox has spent tens of millions of dollars over the past few months to promote Ice Age 3, and it also helps that kids nationwide are tired, cranky, out of school, and in need of air-conditioned pablum to cool down their overheated little brains.
