Will I trigger airport and other security alarm systems after a hip or knee arthroplasty?
The answer here is maybe. Systems vary in sensitivity, and factors such as body mass or type of metal implanted may change an individual response. The more joints you have had implanted, the more likely you are to trigger these alarms. We give patients a small card explaining that they have had a joint replacement, but this may not save you being pulled aside and screened more carefully! After all, the relevant staff can never simply take your word or some piece of paper when the security of others is at stake. It is a risk you really must accept in return for being pain-free and mobile. Newer generations of scanners employ microwaves that only penetrate clothing, and these will eventually be the standard devices for security purposes. Orthopaedic implants will not trigger or be seen on such machines.
