Dear need: Tax refunds are based on how you set up your W4 at work and you can maneuver it to have a refund or break even. Tax credits are something else. As a single parent with one child you would qualify for some EITC but with your combined income and married you would not. Other credits would probably be available married/single and would not phase out until you reached well over $100K. No way to say. Refunds are just your money that you overpaid to the IRS and the state being returned to you. The object is not to get a big refund, but to break even at filing time. Any refund that you get is nothing more than an interest-free loan that you gave the government.
