I’ll second what was said and expand slightly on the answer, nearly all small cameras have a 1/4″x20tpi tripod socket (if they have a tripod socket, that is!). Some cameras, primarily “pro” cameras use a large 3/8″ thread socket but you can find inexpensive adapters permitting use of tripods with the smaller, more standard size. You can, with enough abuse, break one of these adapters (and some adapters are made better than others). Big professional tripods, Manfrotto, Gitzo, Majestic (I love my Majestic!) etc. will support camera screws of either size without adapters. And as was also previously mentioned make sure that whatever widget you use under your camera truly supports it without tipping over or falling off the table. Too little support can be worse than no support.
