Texas is preparing for the arrival of Hurricane Ike which is expected to hit Galveston on the Gulf Coast today. You can keep updated on Ike’s progress through the Galveston webcams. Track Hurricane Ike in Google Earth Governor of Texas, Rick Perry said the hurricane could have an “extraordinary impact”. “I can’t overemphasize the danger that is facing us,” Perry said. Ike is “going to do some substantial damage. It’s going to knock out power, and it’s going to cause massive flooding”, he continued. Nearly a million people along the Texas coast were ordered to flee inland ahead of the storm as authorities ordered the evacuation of low-lying coastal areas south and east of Houston, the fourth largest city in the state. A chunk of the front wall of the Hilton Hotel in Clear Lake fell on a FOX 26 live truck, breaking a window. Wind speeds are picking up as Hurricane Ike inches toward Galveston Island and the Houston area. The U.S. Coast Guard said it has saved 72 residents stranded in high water on Galveston Island’s Bolivar Peninsula. Officials said those rescued were transported to various locations. However, Coast Guard officials say their helicopters will soon be grounded because of the strong winds blowing through the island. Two larger helicopters will be flown from Alabama, but during the meantime, helicopter rescues will have to cease. Galveston Mayor Lyda Ann Thomas issued the evacuation curfew order through Sept. 14. The curfew will take place from 8 p.m. until 5 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 12, Saturday, Sept. 13, and Sunday, Sept. 14. Curfew violators will be subject to arrest and/or a fine in the amount of $2,000.
