Will Feherty burst Faldo’s bubble over knighthood?
As a member of the press at Muirfield who Nick Faldo thanked ‘from the heart of my bottom’ during his witless speech at the 1992 Open trophy presentation, it is tempting to congratulate him on his knighthood from the same deep recess. But that would be just petty. Faldo the person may be more likely to receive a cooker hood than a knighthood. Faldo the golfer, Britain’s best with his six majors, is certainly deserving of the honour. It should be fun hearing what his fellow CBS Sports commentator David Feherty makes of the whole business. Expect a few quips from the man who likened Colin Montgomerie to Mrs Doubtfire and who brilliantly described Jim Furyk’s idiosyncratic swing as resembling ‘an octopus falling out of a tree’. This, too, is the fearless broadcaster who recently told Tiger Woods to his face that he was ‘a loser’. OK, Feherty was obviously teasing and, in fact, the world No 1 had just failed to win a tournament, making him technically a loser. Feherty is not going to think
