Will e-voting machines prevent Florida redux?
When Americans choose between George Bush and John Kerry this November, about one of every six will cast their presidential ballots for the first time on an electronic voting machine. These machines, which are often but not always equipped with touch screens, once seemed to be an obvious solution to the problems that plagued the election of 2000. Lately, though, they have become embroiled in a controversy of their own. November’s election may be the moment when they either rise to the challenge or prove themselves not ready for prime time.
