Will Democracy Come to Cuba Now? Tuesday February 19, 2008Cuban dictator Fidel Castro did not die, but he has resigned his position as commander-in-chief to his brother Raul. How much power Fidel actually hands over to Raul remains to be seen, but his resignation will certainly encourage officials of the U.S. Commission for Assistance to a Free Cuba (CAFC). The mission of the CAFC, with the full support of the State Department, is to assist the Cuban people in “hastening” their transition to democracy and the establishment of a freely elected government, once Fidel Castro is out of the way.
