It is very possible. Subterfuge is the main weapon when fighting a war. Misinformation at a certain point in time can be your greatest asset to win a war. The truth will out eventually.

We can go back as far as the revolutionary war and find hoaxes and fake attacks. This is all apart of war and strategy, propaganda and defeating the will of the enemy as to also prop up the motivation to this country. Nothing new here, BTW WW2 had one of the largest hoaxes enacted by General Patton, weeks before D-Day.
