David Beckham as a player is not a bad one – pretty good actually. But definitely not worth the bloated wages he commands. Any club that gets him gets strapped with a hefty bill. Plus, there’s baggage of being a celebrity person married to a Spice girl. The guy in my book doesn’t really define a footballer, but instead a popular celebrity. He’s sold old now, one does not expect him to run his socks off in a game. He’s something of an old circus attraction now. Good in bringing attention, but nothing else really. The MLS has always been seen here in Europe as Americans see Florida; a happy place to retire. Big names may go there, but they sure as hell don’t add anything to the game as they’ve long started to wilt. They shrivel and die there. Beckenbauer, Stoitchkov, Klinsmann and that Croat guy whose name escapes me right now, just to name a few.
