Will Bernard Lagat’s mark at Albuquerque count as M35 record?
Chad Newton, kiss your record goodbye. Chad is the listed M35 American record-holder in the indoor 3000. He ran 8:42.00 at the 2008 Boston masters nationals. But by 8:30 p.m. Eastern time Saturday, Bernard Lagat will hold the record. That’s when he runs the 3K at the USA Indoor Track & Field Championships in Albuquerque. Bernard turned 35 in December and has run a 3:56.34 mile this season. Last year, Bernard ran the 3K in 7:35.41 (top time in the nation and No. 5 in the world). So if he doesn’t get hit by a truck, the record is his. The listed M35 world record is 7:40.68 by Germany’s Dieter Baumann in 2002. Theoretically, any record set at a U.S. national championship counts for a masters record.
