Will Askville observe 4/25/08 “The Day of Silence”?”
Will Askville observe it? I think not. Not because there’s anything wrong with the movement, it’s just that Askville isn’t the right place for it to be effective. The Day of Silence was created to be a student protest. I’m sure you can see why; if adults stopped talking for a day, they’d likely end up unable to function…and as adults, we don’t really have the luxury of not speaking to, say, our bosses or the insurance company or the babysitter. And if you’re only silent to some people, it stops being a protest and turns into something awfully close to sullenness. Not really a great way to get a message across. It works great for students, though. Students are lumped together and are expected to talk. Having a bunch of totally silent kids (for those that can actually follow through) makes an impression. And that’s one of the ideas behind the movement: it raises awareness of an issue that many people – kids and adults – just aren’t conscious of. It also helps to make people conscious o
