Will Aramark Charge NJEA an Eatery Fee?
In November, the New Jersey Education Association (NJEA) will hold its annual convention in the Atlantic City Convention Center. Thousands of union members will spend two days there, attending workshops, visiting booths and listening to speeches. But there’s a problem. “Aramark Corporation is the Atlantic City Convention Center’s exclusive food and beverage service provider,” NJEA informed its members in its monthly organ. “Aramark has a history of privatizing public school and public college/university food services, facilities, management/custodial services, and auxiliary services such as warehousing and mailroom operations. NJEA cannot allow Aramark to profit from our convention.” As a result, NJEA will not contract with the convention center for food services, arranging instead for box lunches to be sold at kiosks outside and at concession stands in front of the Sheraton Hotel.
