I asked the same question a few days ago and a really nice person provided the following answer: No. It won’t work. The folks at Microsoft have made sure that you have to buy their Hard Drive or Memory Card Unit to save Xbox 360 games, system updates and any content you download from Xbox LIVE. There is no way to save profiles or game data on to a USB external hard drive. You can only use it to read music, videos and photos off of it. The USB Ports are Read only.
