It depends on the eventual size of the tree. If it is a slow growing or dwarf variety, it may be okay. But if it eventually will get large, it might not be a good idea. Remember, under normal conditions, a tree’s roots spread way beyond the spread of the canopy. So anytime you limit the range of the roots, you risk stunting the tree or weakening it so that it is susceptible to disease and pests. I don’t think it will bother the liner of the pond if it is thick, but I’m not sure since the roots will be so confined.
