Will adding Pure Acetone to gas increase gas mileage?

I don’t believe it at all because no one to my knowledge has been able to produce that kind of performance under laboratory conditions. As someone said, Mythbusters tested it. They tested 2 cars on a dynamometer and didn’t get any improvement. Additionally, it was tested by Greg Davis of the Mechanical Engineering Department at Kettering University. He didn’t find any improvement either. I doubt the oil company conspiracy. Acetone is cheaper by volume than gasoline. However it is an oil byproduct that is manufactured by oil companies like Shell and Sunoco. As for your fuel system, I think it will be highly dependent on exactly what your system is made of. Acetone will really do a number on a plastic like polystyrene. On the other hand, acetone does nothing to the plastic High Density Polyethylene (HDPE). It also does not eat away a synthetic rubber like PolyDiMethylSiloxane (PDMS); however, it can swell PDMS and swelling can cause damage in some situations.
