Will a Velan bimetallic steam trap back up condensate and possibly break the steam line due to waterhammer?

No. The Velan design will not sub-cool large amounts of condensate. The Velan multi-segmented bimetallic design follows the steam curve and will hold a maximum of 12-18 inches of water in a ¾” pipe in front of the steam trap. The Velan design will constantly modulate condensate out and drain the line better than intermittent blast-on / blast-off designs in the marketplace. Excessive waterhammer due to condensate backup can happen with any steam trap design that is not sized properly.
