No De-ionisers work by exchanging positive ions for hydrogen and negative ions for hydroxyl Hydrogen plus hydroxyl = water. The positive and negative ions…Calcium, magnsium, iron, sulphate. chloride, ammonium, etc become bonded to the de-ionising resin (sequestered is the posh word) which can be recharged by acid and alkaline washes, and well washed with de-ionised water until a resistance meter on the output shows an acceptable reading. De -ionising resin can be bought from lab equipment suppliers and plumbing shops and is used in a deionising column. Raw water goes in one end and deionised water comes out the other end. You can get mixed resin for cations and anions, or single ones for each. The water quality…the salt content remaining in it…is measured by a resistance meter across the output tube. Resistance of more than 100 000 ohms for a 1cm gap is OK for batteries but for quality lab use like chemical analysis for very small amounts of contaminants in foods, process chemica
