She also stands a much greater chance of getting mammary cancer due to long term exposure to hormones in her body (I lost one just this way that was not spayed, it was when I was young and before I was a vet tech) The heat cycle does not stop in dogs like it does in humans. She is actually at more risk of getting either mammary cancer or Pyrometra than she is by have the surgery. She is just now entering the geriatric stage and anesthesia is safe for her.
