The correct answer is YES, it will fit, and yes you can swap it in. Right now there are several half ton trucks that have Duramax, Cummins and Powerstroke engines swapped into them. They are purpose built trucks for drag racing, usually back halved and running large slicks. You will likely have to do some modifications to the suspension as well as the drivetrain to handle the massive torque that diesels are capable of producing when modified. The half ton rear end will likely grenade itself pretty fast under the big torque and the potential horsepower you may add. Also, diesels are heavy engines. I believe the Duramax is over 800lbs. The front end may need to be strengthend or you will need to swap in front end parts from a 3/4 or 1 ton truck to better support the excess weight. Remember, pretty much anything is possible.
