It is hard to tell what the problem is without looking at it, but it does sound like an overheating problem. To cause the freezing issue there are two things that could potentially be wrong. First, you need to check the fan that cools you processor. Usually when that overheats though your computer just shuts down. Second, you need to check the cooling of your video card. See if that fan is making noise and clean it. If that does not work, then replace it. Since you said you heard an increase in noise, odds are that increase in noise if your problem. Also the odds are if you find where the noise is coming from you will fix your problem. P.S. Yes, better cases will almost always have better cooling. If your GPU does not have a fan, then check any other fan you may have, everything from the power supply to the CPU fan. Sometimes bearings go out and start to make noise.
