Plastelina is non-hardening and can be used again and again; storage is not an issue – the kids can leave it out on the table for days, and it is still soft and malleable. Any kind of clay will work, as long as it is malleable enough for the student to easily work with, and sturdy enough so that a small model can be built of a standing figure (such as a dog or a person or a table) with the clay strong enough to keep the “legs” supporting the rest of the model. Plastelina is simply the most durable and least expensive. Play-dough is generally not firm enough to build sturdy models, and regular modeling clay tends to be more difficult to work with and store.
