Why Write a Graphic Novel?
The more graphic novels I ingest, the more I wonder what inspires these authors and illustrators to write the novels that they write. I am not inquiring as to why they write the stories that they write; I wonder why they create these stories using the medium that they use. Ultimately, the question I want answered is, “Why do graphic novelists write graphic novels as opposed to novels that have no pictures?” The obvious observation would be that in most traditional novels, there are no illustrations. This is not to say that a traditional novel is lacking in terms of visual effects, I am merely pointing out the most obvious of observations. These two types of novels are, however, quite different in methods in regards to creating a setting or displaying a sequence of events that occur outside of dialogue.
