Why would the army take money when it was just an honorable discharge?

AM betting he got an enlistment bonus when he signed up. Or, he was in a career field that had an extended training/school period and hasn’t really had a chance to “do” what he was trained for. In either case, since he chose to get out, he basically quit the job. With the military, if you end your service for just about any reason before the two year mark, you are responsible for paying back the enlistment bonus and possibly the cost of the training. WHile this should have been explained to him when he was given the choice, he really should have stayed in and done the desk job til the end of his enlistment.
