Women are advised to take supplements before and during pregnancy. Spina bifida is a congenital defect. It is characterised by the imperfect closure of the spinal column. That part of the spinal column which is imperfectly closed makes a part of the meninges or the spinal cord protrude. It often results in such neurological disorders as hydrocephalus and other neurological disorders. It also affects the development of the back bones, spinal cord and the nerves and the sac which is filled with fluid, which surrounding the spinal cord.
