Why would Renaissance women wear gowns?
Usually, the types of women that you mentioned in your question wore dress or gowns because it was simply “lady-like.” Even if you were a peasant, you were still a lady and were expected to carry yourself as such, even though, at the same time, you were expected to cook, clean, and take care of the family. But Renaissance women didn’t always wear just gowns or dresses. It depended highly upon what type of people that the ladies would associate with. A commoner for example, will still wear a dress. But a female that spend their times with pirates or other types of rogues might wear pants or leggings. I included a link in the sources section to a page that contains pictures of the type of outfits I’m talking about. Hope this helps!
