Why would anyone choose this player to use as portable HDD instead of the cheap $20 portable HDD enclosure?
2.5″ hard disk, ie portable hard disk can consume more power than one USB port (500mA) can supply during start-up (1A) and read/write. Therefore, in a typical 2.5″ hard disk enclosure which is powered entirely by USB port, if only one USB port is plugged (which most people does), it is possible to cause a power surge which may damage the USB port, possibily causing malfunction of the port. Whereas, the supplement of additional power from the battery in this player ensure that the HDD always receive sufficient power during start-up as well as during read/write. This can prolong life-time of the portable HDD and prevent premature malfunction/damage due to unstable/under-powered USB port.
