Why would adult education programs want to adopt the CASAS Functional Writing Assessment (FWA)?

Writing is a critical skill for adult learners to reach their goals of getting and keeping a job, obtaining a GED, helping their school-aged children, and entering and succeeding at post-secondary education. Many adult education teachers indicate that writing is often their learners’ weakest skill, and is therefore the skill with the greatest potential for improvement and showing growth. The CASAS Functional Writing Assessment gives Colorado’s AEFLA teachers a state-approved, performance-based, standardized test of this critical skill. Additionally, the CASAS FWA can be used with ESL learners and with ABE/ASE learners.
