Actually, I read a book which postulates that Gypsies came from India originally as traveling musicians. The author (Isabel Fonseca) has a number of way to back up her theory, namely comparing similar Roma words with words used in India. To be sure, nobody is 100% positive where the Roma people came from, but her argument seemed logical to me.
