Why won my current SMTP settings work for outgoing mail in the new Thunderbird 3.1.5?

Everything worked great until Thunderbird 3.1.5 downloaded (without me asking) – now I cannot send mail from either of my two valid SMTP settings – my home provider and gmail. Incoming mail is fine.
