Why will Vietnam veterans not vote for John McCain?
During a bombing run over Hanoi (capital of Vietnam), Mr. McCain’s navy plane was shot down and he was imprisoned where he was tortured thereafter for five and a half years. He was offered an early release but he declined stating that prisoners who have been there long before he has were entitled to be released before him. This made the Vietnamese treat him even more severely than they already were. The Vietnam war was a very painful period for both the Vietnamese and the Americans but of course it was more painful for the Vietnamese. It is very hard for people and especially veterans to forget about what they had witnessed during the war, not mentioning their beloved people whom they lost. Even though Mr. John McCain restored relationships between the USA and Vietnam, he will always be apprehended as a soldier who fought against the Vietnamese and thus resemble painful memories for the Vietnamese. This is why the Vietnamese veterans will probably not vote for him. Sources:
