Why will my new MacBook/iTunes Libr not recognize my old pc-formatted iPod?

I recently switched from a PC to a MacBook and while I was able to successfully move my iTunes library from one to the other (by means of an external hard drive), my iTunes library does not recognize my iPod (3.5 years old) and thus will not allow me to reformat it — the iPod icon does not appear anywhere in my library and the iPod screen just says ‘Do Not Disconnect’ (and will do so for as long as it is connected — I once waited an hour before giving up). What I would like to do is replace what is currently on the iPod with my more updated/more complete iTunes library collection of music. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
