Why will my 2001 ford taurus not shift into gear out of park?
It could be several problems. All the following info pertains to if the car will start in park and not go out of gear. If it is a floor shift, I would check two parts on the car(brake pedal position switch and the shift interlock solenoid). First check the fuses going to these parts. Fuse#217 15amp and fuse #232 10amp. Both are in the central juction box under the hood. If they are good you should look at the brake pedal position switch (most common). It is a two wire swich connected to the top of the brake pedal on the master cylinder rod. The wires going to it are red with green stripe (switch input) and light green with red stripe (batter voltage at all times). In all honesty the switch is cheap and u can save the hassle by just swapping it with a new one. The shift interlock solenoid is under the center console connected to the shifter. The console has a lot of hidden screws so don’t pry too hard. If it is a column shift the interlock is on top of the steering column, half way down
