Why when we say tin cans or tin foil do you say steel or aluminium?
Modern tin cans are almost completely made from steel, with a very thin layer of tin to prevent rusting. The tin layer is so small that it is not normally possible to economically recover separately and it remains on the cans when they are recycled into new steel. Tin foil is actually made from aluminium and contains no tin.
