Why, when discussing white people, do people bring up slavery?

I never bring up slavery in everyday talk…. but I live in Atlanta, where a lot of black people talk about it like it’s still going on today. I hear them on the train all the time. In a lot of neighborhoods nearby, there are equal numbers black/white or more blacks than whites. What I don’t get is the obsession with holding onto the degrading, oppressive past when slavery ended in 1865. People of all color and creed have opportunity now, and it seems to hold you back is you are always talking about how the white man still “enslaves” the black man. I don’t get it. For the person who said that whites benefited from slavery– so did the tribes that were in West Africa that were not captured and sold. Africans were capturing Africans and selling them, just as whites were. I think a lot of people forget that.

Slavery still goes on in Sudan. Slavery was written about as normal in the Old Testament of the Bible. Slavery has been done to every race, and by every race. With that being said, the wounds of slavery have still not healed in America. I don’t mind the topic being brought up if it’s in an adult manner. No, you are not guilty of slavery, but don’t be afraid to talk about it. We should learn from our past so we don’t repeat it. Corporations and big business obviously hasn’t learned from the past because they use child labor over seas to make clothing for Wal-Mart. And 40% of Mexico has been allowed to come to America to undercut the wages of Americans. Greed is a big motivation that we have never grew out of.
