Why were trenches used during the first world war?
Trenches were used because on flat ground where ther wasn’t a lot to hide behind and you had to create your own wall. This was done by digging a hole and piling the dirt up on the edges to conceal your whereabouts. In the first World War the use of aircraft for bombing was limited and an attack from above was not common. Most of the shooting was direct fire where they shot at what they could see. If you were in a hole you were hidden.
