Elgar did apparently encounter a number of odd creatures while aboard the subcraft (including sharks [1], large squid [2], and a creature with a giant eye [3]), but whether the subcraft was in Angel Grove Lake during every instance isn’t known definitively (see “Subcraft” for discussion).
