Why were there no priests in the early Christian church?
You have to remember to start with that the first Christians were mainly of Jewish descent. In order to be a priest you had to be a descendant of the tribe of Levi. To be a High Priest you had to be a descendant of Levi’s son Aaron. First century Christians were a mix of Jew and Gentile peoples so the office of priest was not an appropriate one for them. The Old Testament function of a priest was to represent the individual and perform ceremonial acts. Jesus became our High Priest after the order of Melchizedek. This order did not have a priestly office so the office was never created in the early Christian Church.
