Why were the terms Axis and Allies used to designate the opposing sides?

Well I am pretty sure they used the name Allies because it was the same name used in WWI and with the exception of Italy and Japan not fighting on our side this time they kept it the Allies. They still use the term today. Now as far as Axis goes I can only guess here, an Axis is three and their were three countries at war with the Allies, Germany, Italy and Japan. Unlike WWI where much of the countries on Germany’s side were right next to it hence being called the Central powers in WWI, but i can only think that because it was three countries they named it Axis. Thats my best guess, sorry i do not have any proof to back it up and I’m not old enough to have lived in the era. I hope it helps some though.
