Traditionally, the group specific standards at the PSC were organized by occupational categories (for example, the Administrative and Foreign Services Category). These categories were repealed by the Public Service Reform Act in April 1993 and are no longer in use. In 1999, the Treasury Board approved a streamlined occupational group structure that amalgamated groups of similar types of work. For example, the Operational Services (SV) Group consists of the former (legacy) Firefighters (FR), General Labour and Trades (GL), General Services (GS), Senior System Software Programmer or Analyst (HP), Hospital Service (HS), Lightkeepers (LI), Ships Crew (SC) and Personnel Resources (PR) groups. It is this streamlined occupational group structure that is currently in effect in the core public administration.
