Why were growth plans developed first for the Greater Golden Horseshoe and Northern Ontario – isn’t the need for growth planning more urgent in other parts of the province?
The Greater Golden Horseshoe is the fastest growing urban region in Canada and an economic engine of Ontario. Its success impacts all of Ontario. We need to ensure that it remains prosperous and healthy and that is why it is the first area to be designated a growth plan are under the Places to Grow Act, 2005. Ontario is a diverse province and its many regions face different growth challenges. For example, some areas are facing pressures due to high levels of growth, while others are dealing with shifting economic realities or demographic changes, such as Northern Ontario, which is the focus of the second growth plan.
